Reducing the Risk

Following recent flooding and increased standing water, mosquito populations may increase, which can contribute to a higher risk of West Nile virus activity. While this is a seasonal concern in Manitoba, there are simple steps residents can take to help protect themselves, their families, and our communities.
Thank you to our public health partners for continuing to monitor mosquito activity and providing important guidance to help Manitobans stay informed and safe.
Residents can reduce their risk by:
Using an approved insect repellent when spending time outdoors
Wearing light-coloured clothing that covers skin when possible
Limiting exposure during peak mosquito activity times, such as dusk and dawn
Removing standing water around homes and properties where mosquitoes can breed
Ensuring window and door screens are in good repair
Most people infected with West Nile virus do not develop symptoms, but some individuals may experience illness. If you have health concerns following mosquito exposure, contact your health care provider or seek medical advice.
